ABOUT
JUDO

Judo, meaning “the gentle way”, is a Japanese martial art founded by Jigoro Kano in the late 19th century. It developed out of traditional Jiu-Jitsu, the combat system of the samurai, but Kano refined and adapted it by removing dangerous elements and creating a practice centered on education, fitness, mutual respect, and character development. Today, Judo is practiced worldwide as both an Olympic competitive sport, a form of recreational practice, and a lifelong path of personal growth.

At its heart, Judo teaches values that shape both body and mind: respect for
partners, discipline, perseverance, and the principle of Jita-Kyoei (“mutual welfare
and benefit
”). Students of all levels train together, helping one another progress while developing skill and confidence.

In our classes, students are introduced to Judo step by step in a safe and supportive environment. Training covers:

  • Falls (Ukemi): learning how to fall safely and confidently, a skill that protects you both on the mat and in daily life.

  • Throws (Nage-waza): using balance, timing, and leverage to bring an opponent to the ground with controlled techniques.

  • Groundwork (Ne-waza), including:

    • Holding techniques (Osae-komi-waza): controlling an opponent on the ground through stable body positioning,

    • Joint locks (Kansetsu-waza): carefully applied techniques to immobilize an opponent,

    • Chokes (Shime-waza): techniques that teach controlled restraint.

Beyond technique, every class develops endurance, strength, flexibility, balance,
and coordination
, making Judo a complete form of physical training. Judo can be
physically demanding and requires effort, but we place great importance on making training enjoyable. Classes are designed to be engaging while accommodating individual needs and fitness levels, ensuring that everyone can progress at their own pace.

While this program is not designed as a pure self-defense course, many elements
can expand your personal repertoire and confidence.
Whether you want to improve your fitness, explore martial arts beyond self-defense, or connect with a tradition rooted in both history and modern sport, Judo offers a unique path of athletic challenge, mental focus, and personal development.
